HOW TO CARE FOR KNITWEAR?
A GUIDE FOR DURABLE AND LONG-LASTING KNITWEAR

Whether hiking in the mountains, relaxing by a cozy campfire or exploring the city, knitwear is the perfect companion for every adventure. To ensure your camel active favourites last for many seasons, proper care is essential.

In this blog post, we answer the most common questions about knitwear care and share practical tips to keep your garments in top condition.

HOW DO I WASH KNITWEAR? HANDWASH VS. MACHINE WASH

The golden rule for knitwear: less is more. The less frequently you wash your knitwear, the longer it maintains its shape and quality. Often, simply airing out your garments will suffice. However, if washing becomes unavoidable, the choice is between hand washing and machine washing.

Hand washing is more gentle and recommended for delicate fibers like cashmere or merino wool. Fill a basin with lukewarm water, add a mild wool detergent, and gently move the garment through the water. Rinse with clean water, being careful not to wring or rub the material, as this can damage the fibers.

Machine washing can be an option for more robust knitwear, such as cotton blends. Use a delicate or wool cycle, place the garment in a laundry bag, and select a low temperature (max 30°C) with a gentle spin cycle.

What is the best detergent for wool and knitwear?

To maintain the quality of your knitwear, choose a mild wool detergent free from enzymes. This protects the fibers, prevents felting, and preserves the garment's natural characteristics. Baby shampoo is also a gentle and effective alternative for washing knitwear.

CAN I PUT KNITWEAR IN THE DRYER?

The short answer: no. High heat and tumble drying can damage fibers, cause shrinking, or distort the garment’s shape. Instead, opt for air drying. Lay your knitwear flat on a towel, gently reshape it, and let it dry in a shaded, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight or heaters.

Bügeleisen

Can you iron knitwear?

Ironing knitwear is rarely needed and can strain the material. If necessary, use the lowest setting, place a damp cloth between the iron and the fabric, and iron from the inside. A steamer is a safer alternative for removing wrinkles.

HOW TO PREVENT PILLING AND KEEP KNITWEAR LOOKING GREAT

Pilling occurs when loose fibers form small bobbles on the fabric’s surface—a natural process from wear or washing. Use a lint shaver or pilling comb to gently remove them without damaging the fibers. Avoid scissors, as they could harm the garment.

Tip: Wash knitwear in a laundry bag to reduce friction and prevent pilling.

HOW TO REMOVE STAINS FROM KNITWEAR

Stains on your favorite knit sweater? Don’t worry—act quickly! Fresh stains are much easier to remove. Use lukewarm water and a mild wool detergent to gently blot the area. Avoid rubbing, as this can roughen the fibers or cause felting.

For stubborn stains, apply a small amount of detergent directly to the affected area, gently massage it in, and let it sit for a few minutes before washing as usual. Always handle your knitwear with care to preserve its delicate structure.

HOW TO STORE KNITWEAR PROPERLY

Proper storage is essential for maintaining your knitwear’s shape and longevity. Avoid hanging knitwear, as this can cause it to stretch out of shape. Instead, fold your garments and store them in a cool, well-ventilated space. During off-seasons, use breathable storage bags to protect your knitwear from dust and moths. For extra protection, add lavender sachets or cedar blocks, which help repel moths and leave a pleasant scent.

With these easy care tips, your camel active knitwear will remain a trusted companion for all your adventures. Proper washing, drying, and storing can make all the difference. Check out our latest knitwear collection in the camel active online shop—you might just find your next favorite piece!
